How do you protect yourself and your family from the HPV Food Recall and other dangerous industrial food products? That is the challenge we all face. Most of us have very little control over the food produced and made available to us and it is becoming increasing more difficult to maintain safe food shopping practices. While it is true that we have little control over industrial food there are some things we can do to understand the system and know how to be savvy consumers.
Of course, by far the best option and the one that gives you the most control and the greatest health benefit is to opt out of the industrial food model all together. We will be writing much more about some of these options and are considering offering a webinar on the topic in the near future. These options include ideas such as growing your own garden, sharing work in a community garden or joining a CSA, a bulk food coop, or a farm share
Our first step in protection should be ownership. As long as we are expecting someone else to perform the task for us we will never take the actions needed to accomplish the goal. We can not depend on the character of corporations or the benevolence of the government to do a job for us. The FDA cannot save you and the corporations are just doing their job – making money.
However, that does not mean that we don’t need to understand their role in this corporatized system or that we cannot use the information they provide for our benefit. Below is a chart of how the USDA classifies recalls. The current HPV Recall is a Class 1 recall. Even though the media reports continue to say “there have been no reported illness associated with this recall” does not mean there is not a threat to your health?
|USDA Recall Classifications|
|Class I||This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.|
|Class II||This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.|
|Class III||This is a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences.|
