Hi Paul and Beth,
We’re getting a new 2 week old bull calf in a few days. I’m wondering if you could share how you feed yours. With our goats we don’t give them grain until they’re much older, and have them on milk until around 9 weeks, and start hay at about 2 weeks. But the farmer we’re getting our guy from (calf’s name is ’supper’) said he’s already on grain.
Any advice or tips?
Thanks for all your inspiration. My beloved and I consult your blog frequently for info because we know you’ve already been there, done that.
Blessings,
Becki

Hi Guys, Congratulations on your new bull! We have had a bunch of experience with bottle calves and young cows this last year… much of it not good! But all of it was a learning experience. We typically do not like to grain our cows as a rule. But we have found that you must have a much higher grade pasture and hay than we were feeding them once they weaned. The short of it is we went to a decent mid-grade non-medicated calf feed and saw a great difference in the animals. We will wean them off that this spring and finish them out on grass, but for the winter we had to find what they needed and give it to them.
I hope that helps! Let us know how it goes.
Paul
