What’s in a Name Part III – Dabney

dabney2.jpgRobert Lewis Dabney was a prophet who spoke to the areas of Christianity that were being attacked by the world with a clarity almost unheard of in our day.  Noah Dabney Providence Vaughn is named after this great man of God.
He lived from 1820-1898 and was the Professor in Union Seminary, Virgina for 40 years.  Dr. Archibald Alexander said Dabney was ‘the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world’ as a contemporary to men like Charles Hodge that is quite a statement.
As a teacher Dabney was extraordinary, but it was his keen insight and Issachararian discernment coupled with his direct communication style that captured his place in history as a true prophet.  In this regard, Professor Albert H. Freundt, Jr of Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson Mississippi said of Dabney:

“A man of extraordinary gifts of perception and analysis, of logic combined with warmth and moral sensitivity, Dabney championed the doctrines of Calvinism and applied them consistently and practically to the great issues of his times.  In Dabney one senses a firm conviction of truth and duty.”

To this end we see the truthfulness of Dabney’s words written over a century ago still hitting the target they originally assailed.  The targets he took aim upon were as varied and dangerous as any we face today.  In fact he was one of the first to identify many of the challenges the modern church is facing.
As I started this post I wished to include a couple Dabney quotes for your edification and for Providence’s future encouragement.  But picking one or two choice Dabney quotes is like picking a favorite star in the southern sky.  There are far too many superior offerings available.  As such, we will include a Dabney quote section on the site and will add words of wisdom from Dabney on a semi-regular basis.  In addition you will find a listing of some of his works here.
As the second name for the new child God has given us, our prayer is that Providence will learn to be like the men of Issachar who could discern the times and then like Dabney, rightly apply the word of God to the issues of his time.

    Hello Vaughn Family!!!
Congratulations on your new beautiful boy!! We are so happy for you. We have thought of you all, but our lives have been so chaotic. We just moved into our cabin last Friday. We didn’t have access to our address book, so couldn’t email anyone to let them know updates. I am so glad that I checked on your site and found Bethany had had the baby.
Hope you all are well. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
    Miss you guys,
