I've just "discovered" you, and thank you for putting into words what i've been feeling for some time now. The food additives ok'd by usda etc. are probably the reason for the increase in autisum. They were ok'd but not really tested. Who's to say that something that didn't kill you in three or five years wouldn't harm the next generations?

Even back when I worked full-time I drew a convenience food line at bread, pasta and canned beans. I canned or froze most of the other veggies we used and relied on in-season purchases for the rest. Even now when I'm at home my friends are astonished that I make gelatin desserts with fruit juice instead of boxed sugar mixes, roll out pie crusts and even make my own bulk sausage. Still, I do know that I have a lot more convenience in my kitchen - what with the several varieties of rice, flours and pastas, not to mention peanut butter, and, yes, hot dogs! - that I don't really feel like I'm doing anything exceptional, just what women have done for eons. Still, my kitchen habits astound and amuse most of the people I know!

I recently read an article, I wish I could remember where, but it was about how cookbook publishers are having to seriously dumb down cookbooks because people don't know what words like "saute" mean, or they have to say "Break open an egg, add to bowl" rather than just "add egg and beat" because people were apparently putting the egg in whole, shell and all!

Ok, so my stomach actually turned at the thought of pre-boiled and peeled eggs...are we really that lazy of a country??

All of this talk of pre-made, "convenience" food makes me wonder about all the chemicals and the process in which it's all preserved...and then I think, is it really a wonder why things like cancer are so rampant nowdays???

Well that is a new one... I have never seen the eggs... BUT I was told by a friend of mine that works in the meat department at the grocery store to never buy the pre-marinated meats. She said they take the roasts and meats that are close to expiring and put the sauces on them to cover up the "not so great color".
As a full time working Mom of 2, it is sad when you cannot find the time to boil a hot dog or peel an egg.

I have to say, my "favorite" convenience food is frozen, pre-made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Really, how hard are they to make?

Now that was a great post! My husband and i talk about the convenience culture in America. Although, we hadn't met up with the pre-boiled, pre-peeled eggs. He'll get a laugh out of that one.

We do use convenience foods in our diet, although not quite that convenienced. And I do our breakfast baking myself and bake bread as often as I can. Even make my own chocolate cookies rather than waste money on the packaging and marketing. :D

Took the words right out of my mouth - but you said it much better. :)
When I saw the hot dogs, I thought "Wow, I didn't know it was that hard to put a hot dog together, seriously, it's crazy". My mind was boggled for awhile.
Love your blog. Thanks for the blessings.
