Farm Boys Raising Chickens

Raising meat chickens has been a great experience for our whole family. At first the care consisted of keeping them in the basement (NOT FREE RANGE) under warm lights and changing out their bedding a couple times a day. Quickly they were ready to be moved to the barn to a bigger chicken box.

After couple of weeks or so in the barn, they were finally ready to free range in the chicken yard eating bugs, grass and scraps from the kitchen in addition to their feed, which by the way has increased greatly as the weeks have gone by.

These birds are really strange. Because they are cross bred, they are designed to be meat birds. They are lazy, eat constantly and many times have to flap their wings just to balance themselves when they run across the yard.

The boys have had a disciplined routine of feeding and caring for these chickens for the past many weeks.

We have had a few predators but because of all the time and effort going into these birds, the final weeks bring anxious anticipation and watchful eyes insuring that nothing gets to these birds. Last night, the older boys slept in their tent on the deck outside overlooking the chicken yard, armed with bows and sling shots just in case a opossum or stray cat came preying upon their chickens.

So far, we have decided that raising meat for our family will be a yearly event although we will be switching to spring raising rather than fall due to the weather.

More updates on our home grown meat operation in a few weeks…

Seasons

If there is one principle I understood almost immediately after our family moved states, it was a clear understanding of the word seasons! We actually now have real live dramatic seasons. Beautiful but cold winters with some snow and ice. Beautiful spring weather and outstanding trees and flowers. The greenest summers I have ever seen. The Fall weather is my favorite with incredible brilliant colored foliage and cool brisk weather.

Just as the seasonal weather patterns change, so are the seasons in ones life. A home filled with little babies and toddlers will not be in the same season as the home where children have already been raised. Many of us moms with many young children are in a strenuous season of hearty work completely consumed with logistical aspects of homemaking and mothering. We need to expect to work hard.

I may not be able to homeschool like other mothers with older children or mothers who have a less amount of children. Our homeschooling season matches our abilities and should not look exactly like the other moms. Each mother may have different abilities in the kitchen and depending on the season of life she is in, she may be able to cook from scratch all day long or may be struggling just to open canned soup at lunch time.

While we all have the biblical standard we need to be following, the outworking of how seasons of life affect each individual will vary.

It is important to recognize seasons in your life.

Some of the seasons in my life are:

  • Never expect the laundry room to be empty because the laundry will never be all done.
  • Expect missing shoes and socks no matter how organized I am.
  • Buy massive amounts of food and always cook extra.
  • Expect one thing right after the other and then some more.
  • Hard work is good for me.
  • I expect people to stare and ask me questions when I am out in public.
  • My kitchen is supposed to be a well oiled machine. There is always something cooking, rising, fermenting, needing to be washed, needing to be put away or needing to be swept. RELAX, so what if it is never perfectly cleaned, I use my kitchen.
  • Sleeping through the night is not possible.
  • Toddler and baby diaper and potty accidents will happen often and at the most inopportune times.
  • There is ALWAYS something to do so plan the day. Practice doing what I can and knowing when to rest. Never give up.

GOP “Party Of Death,” Too

I tired to edit this down to manageable bites, but there was just too much good stuff.  I would encourage you to read the entire article here

GOP “Party Of Death,” Too
By Chuck Baldwin
October 27, 2006

This column is archived at
http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2006/cbarchive_20061027.html
For the sake of those who are unfamiliar with my background: I was raised as a Democrat. I remained a Democrat until 1980, when I registered as a Republican. I observed a demonstrable difference in Ronald Reagan’s conservatism and felt proud to not only vote for him twice, but also, as the Florida Moral Majority Executive Director, to actively help register tens of thousands (not an exaggeration) of new voters throughout the state during his 1984 reelection campaign….

…I am amazed at how many of my conservative brethren, especially my Christian conservative brethren, continue to believe that the Republican Party is a conservative party. It’s not. Not even in the broadest definition of the term is the GOP conservative.

…It was a Republican-dominated U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion on demand in 1973 with two monumental decisions: Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.  …Furthermore, since 1973, Republican-dominated Courts have repeatedly reaffirmed abortion-on-demand, including the current Court.

Republicans have enjoyed a sizeable majority on the Supreme Court for more than 30 years. The current makeup of the Court stands in favor of Republican appointments by a margin of 7-2…

…it is the Republican Party, more than the Democrat Party, that, by its action, legalized, augmented, and legitimized abortion-on-demand. How can anyone say that the GOP is the “party of life” with a straight face? It’s laughable. Democrats may talk pro-abortion (and do), but it is the Republican Party that actually gave America abortion….

…Let me put it another way: there were 4,000 unborn babies aborted every day when George W. Bush became president back in 2001. After nearly six years of the Republican Party in complete control of the entire federal government, including both houses of Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, there are still 4,000 unborn babies being aborted every day! Between 2000 and 2006 all the GOP has given pro-lifers is rhetoric!

…That is not to say that there are not a few principled pro-life Republicans in Washington, D.C. There are. However, they are a distinct minority. For example, When Rep. Ron Paul proposed H.R. 776, The Sanctity of Life Act of 2005, a bill “to provide that human life shall be deemed to exist from conception,” there were only 5 cosponsors: Roscoe Bartlett, Ron Lewis, Charlie Norwood, Scott Garrett, and Jeff Miller. What happened to the rest of the so-called “pro-life” Republicans? What happened to our so-called “pro-life” president, George W. Bush? Did we hear him say one word of support for H.R. 776? No, we did not.

Furthermore, it is standard practice for GOP national party leaders to throw their power and weight (not to mention money) to pro-choice Republicans running against pro-life Republicans in primary races all over America. This happens all the time.

Let’s also not forget that it was our pseudo “pro-life” president, George W. Bush who just recently gave his support to the abortifacient “Plan B” which prodded the Food and Drug Administration to authorize its sale over the counter without a prescription. Therefore, now that millions of people have unrestricted access to “Plan B,” the true number of abortions will multiply exponentially. In other words, President George W. Bush has not only done nothing to end abortion on demand, he has actually dramatically increased the numbers of abortions taking place.

By the same token, if grassroots Republicans were themselves truly pro-life, they had the opportunity to support a genuine pro-life candidate when Alan Keyes was seeking the nomination for president. That they chose to elect the phony conservative, George W. Bush, means that Republicans’ commitment to the life issue is shallow at best.

It is time for the American people (especially Christian conservatives) to recognize that the two-party system in Washington, D.C., is beyond broke: it is a joke! Pat Buchanan was absolutely right when he said that the two major parties are “two wings of the same bird of prey.” One party tends to support Big Business; the other party tends to support Big Labor. However, both parties support Big Government, and neither party supports the U.S. Constitution or conservative principles….

….However, as long as Christian conservatives remain determined to support the Republican Party under the pathetic “lesser of two evils” mantra, they will continue to elect these neocons who will continue to betray our most basic convictions.

Dear Christian friend, try something radical this November: vote for the most principled constitutionalist you can find, no matter his or her party affiliation, and trust God with the outcome of your vote. As far as the abortion debate is concerned, the GOP has absolutely no right to call itself the “party of life,” because it is not.

Blogging changes coming 2007!

I lament to my husband frequently that there are never enough hours in a day and that if only I could go without eating and sleeping, I could get much more done! Maybe I am a hyperactive housewife? I just don’t think those extra things are extra. What’s baking bread or growing a garden in the middle of winter? Those things seem like givens to me. I would love to add goat milking and chair upholstery to my list. The only problem is my hours run out before I am finished working. I hate that.

It seems that daily there are stories, happenings and events, lessons learned, successes and failures, many accomplishments and many must do’s.

Life on this small rural piece of land provides many opportunities for learning and growing in unique and simple ways. I fall in love with simplicity by just hearing the cows moo, the birds sing, the trees rustle. Many times simplicity is never simple. The work involved in merely raising a handful, or two handfuls of children is far from simple, however, many simple things have blessed me in my complicated simple life.

My writing continues, be it a slow pace, at least it is some pace. My motherly and homemaker duties are so consuming as I believe mothers should be peacefully consumed with good hard work of their children and homes. It is fulfilling.

As the year is beginning to come to a close, I have begun to think about the goals for this year as well as next.

In an effort to redirect some of my energies to other pursuits I am wanting to do, my plans for my journal blogging have become this: At the end of the year, I will be compiling my blog over the last year and a half into a booklet for my children and turning this blog page into an archive for past posts instead of regular blogging. Until then, I will continue several updates on our farm life as well as some other homemaking ideas I have come to love.

While the thought of blogging is not that important to me, the art of journaling is. That will be something always important and a discipline I wish to maintain.

However, to catch updates for our family, practical homemaking ponderings and other interesting topics, I plan on posting to my website instead of a daily blog (which has never been daily!)

Any thoughts?

Tax Money Spent on AIDS

Just as a short post script to the previous post about the sodomite Mark Dybul’s appointment as Ambassador.  The site of the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator reports that they will spend $15,000,000,000 (BILLION) on GLOBAL AIDS programs over a five year period.

Let’s put those numbers in perspective for a large American family.  If a large American family can live comfortably on $100,000 a year, then a family could live of the money we are spending on AIDS in the next five years for 150,000 (that’s thousand) years!

Since we will probably not be spending US Dollars 150,000 years from now, let’s spread the wealth a little.  How about we divide that salary and distribute it evenly for the next five years?  That would mean that 30,000 American families could live at a $100,000 annual expenditure rate for the next fives years!

We are being fairly generous giving a six figure “salary” away, let’s bring it more into the norm.  The median household income in 2003 was $43,318.  That’s a few years old, so let’s just round it off at $45,000.  If we took this money from the unconstitutional global program to fund and support sodomites and gave it back to the taxpayer who worked for the money, we could fund 33 entire towns that have a population of 10,000 residents at the median income level!  That is 333,333 families that could have a year together building relationships, making plans for the future, starting family businesses, working on the children’s education, or any number of helpful things as they would not be stressed about earning enough money to support their family and the world’s AIDS carriers.

Now let’s not advocate the redistribution of the wealth from all the other tax paying Americans who would be left after this 333,333 had their year off.  Let’s just give it back to the 131 Million taxpayers who paid it to begin with.  If we did that every taxpayer in American would receive a check for One Hundred Fifteen Dollars and Fifty Cents!

What would that 15 billion dollars look like in the hands of the people who earned it as it was placed back into our American economy, by their discretionary spending.  We should also consider that this this money is not only removed from the American taxpayer who earned it.  But it is removed from the American economy as well as it is spent globally!

Condi Rice and Laura Bush support Sodomite Mark Dybul

This is just too much to pass up but at the same time it makes one almost speechless.  Here is the deal, there was a swearing in ceremony on October 10th, for the next Global AIDS Coordinator, Mark Dybul.  Stop!  Why do we have a GLOBAL AIDS anything?  Why are my tax dollars paying someones salary to A) fight AIDS “globally“, and B) fight AIDS anywhere?  That is a legitimate constitutional concern.  But there’s more.

I know its a shock but the Global AIDS Coordinator is a sodomite and has a live in “Partner”, which our tax dollars will now be supporting.  Actually they have been supporting them both since they were already living off the tax payers of the land as AIDS “researchers”.  But now we are supporting him with an Ambassadors salary and position!  This is a legitimate moral concern.  My conscience objects to supporting sodomites with money I earn.  Secondly the principles of justice cry out as they are trampled in the streets of our nation as money that should be going to support my family and causes I believe in are being sent to Washington, DC and being used to support an agenda and it’s people that is absolutely antithetical to my beliefs.  Who is forcing who’s beliefs on who in this scenario?

Next, we need to understand the Republicrats are not the good guys!  This is happening under a Republican “conservative” so called “Christian” president.  We’ll you say, “but maybe he didn’t really know.  I mean he’s a busy guy and has a lot on his hands in the Middle East.  He vested the authority in Condi Rice and she did it under the radar… you know, shes the liberal of the crowd.”  That in itself would not fly as one is responsible for what happens under their watch, but sadly that is not even the case.  Laura Bush, the presidents own wife, was standing on the platform giving moral support from the White House because she is such “a tireless advocate” for this program.

Wait, it gets better.  Secretary of State Rice actually referred to the Sodomite’s Partner’s mother as his, “mother-in-law”.  It’s funny, but it seems like we just had a newspaper, make this same “mistake”.  If you want to force people to accept sodomite marriages then start using the terminology as if it was already acceptable.  I predict you will begin to hear more of this type of language in all manner of places.

Lastly, the true icing on the cake, is that Jason (sodomite number two) actually held the Bible for his “partner” while he was being sworn in!  That’s right, take another look at the picture.  They may have done it to mock Christians and try to give legitimacy to their sin.  But what they have done is mock the very God who created them.  They fail to realize that they only breathe their breath each day by His permission.  I don’t suspect they will be drawing that breath for much longer, based simply on the Holiness of God and the fact that His word says he is not mocked.  Or perhaps, since they and the others who participated in this mockery are representing the nation of America before the council of Heaven, perhaps we as a nation will not be around much longer.

Poverty and the Wellfare State

Written by:
Rev. Rusty Lee Thomas
Elijah Ministries

The Apostle Paul teaches us that God’s love needs to abound in both judgment and knowledge (Philippians 1:9). Love does have parameters which God has defined in His word. In stating this truth, there is still no question that both Testaments of God’s word declares His deep concern for the poor and those who suffer under the weight of poverty.

To deal effectively against the onslaught of lack, however, one must discern its root cause. Biblically, this root is revealed as idolatry. There is a reason why the Christian West has prospered and has experienced a better quality of life beyond pagan nations. We, at least, historically, worshipped the true and living God. He became our great benefactor as a result. But notice, how much our wealth is being drained as we become more idolatrous. Jobs are going overseas and illegal immigration is straining our national infrastructure.

We must also discern Biblically how God expects mankind to deal with the poverty. On the one hand, He declares the poor shall always be amongst us (John 12:8). So, we can never tire of God’s prescriptions on how we handle poverty. First, God’s word teaches us that hunger should work for a man. Hunger is used by God to combat man’s natural inclination to be lazy, slothful, and unproductive. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 states, “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should they eat.” Thus, God’s first line of defense against poverty is self-government. Each person is responsible before God to serve, work, and be industrious in some meaningful way in this life. In fact, the Apostle Paul goes one step further and states, “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth (Ephesians 4:28).” So not only is it God’s will for a man to work to satisfy his own hunger, he should work to help others in need as well.

Some might argue, what happens if an individual is handicapped or incapacitated? What happens if someone cannot work to provide his own needs? What happens then? In such cases, God introduces His second line of defense to defeat poverty, which is family government. 1 Timothy 5:8 states, “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” God expects the family to care for its own. Parents are to lay up for the children and as life progresses and the parents age, the children are to care for the parents. This is God’s social security and welfare system. At one time in America’s history, this brilliant system was known as family. Today, however, it is called Federal Programs.

Lastly, if these two governments fail, the last line of defense is the Church of Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 5:16 states, “If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.” Notice the Church is called upon only in the case the family cannot perform its duty. James stated, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” God expects His Church to feed the poor, clothe the naked, visit the sick and prisoner, relieved the oppressed, and be a father to the fatherless, especially, when individuals and families fail in their responsibilities.

There is no mention, however, where God calls the state to care for the poor. The symbol of God’s authority ascribed to the state is a sword. It is not a spoon or a welfare trough. The reason for God prohibiting the state to be involved in caring for the poor is man’s natural inclination towards idolatry. The one who meets the need, tends to be the one worshipped.

Plus, we need to weigh the Biblical principle that teaches, he who serves, leads, especially, when it comes to ministering to the poor. The humanist that views the state as the ultimate authority understands this concept a lot better than the Church. It is also this ignorance on the part of the Church that is one of the leading reasons why we have become irrelevant in our nation. The humanists have replaced the role of the Church in our nation with Marxist, socialist, policies that are taxing us to death to care for the poor. Their pagan philosophy is cradle to the grave government programs. This empowers them and is one of the reasons why they are leading our nation further and further away from the God of our fathers and the Biblical principles that blessed us in times past. Ultimately, civil government pursuing this idolatrous course will eventually go broke as they try to play God in the life of its citizens. The bottom line is civil government can never be used as a replacement for Almighty God amongst the citizenry. It is a terrible substitute for God and fathers for that matter. Civil government should never be viewed as Jehovah Jirah, the One who sees the need and provides. Unfortunately, for too many Americans, this is exactly the national view. Too many believe the Savior of mankind resides in Washington DC, rather than being born in Bethlehem.

Add to this dilemma, there are well-meaning Christians who are lacking in a Biblical worldview when it comes to these crucial matters. Thus, they inadvertently prop up this deplorable condition that robs God of His worship and robs from people the incentive of living productive lives. Therefore let us return to God, understand his word, and apply His truth to the burning issues of the day. This is the only way we can effectively minister to the poor, secure God’s worship, and bring our government back to its Biblical and Constitutional jurisdictions.

Pantry Building: Grandmother’s idea

The grocery and household supplies spending for large and medium size families doesn’t have to be huge though the food and supplies are. And building a pantry for these supplies doesn’t have to be difficult. I think that moms with just a few children can benefit from learning some shopping tips as well as stocking their home with supplies and food to serve their size family adequately.

The frustration levels and stress that a mom deals with when the pantry is bare, the kids are hungry and the husband is about to walk in the door is draining. Having that area of our life prepared and taken care of lifts a huge burden.

I have started building my pantry and we have been reaping the incredible benefits of returning to the idea of “grandmother’s pantry”. I have cleaned up some shelves that now house laundry detergent, stain cleaner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, shampoo, diapers and other household and personal supplies. The kitchen pantry is also being built with the same purpose: buy multiple quantities on sale with the goal of limiting immediate need buying.

I was reading an article about building your pantry that mentioned the old time custom of Grandmother’s Pantry. It said:

Your grandmother surely had one; your mother probably did, too. But as a contemporary cook in a contemporary home, you may not have one at all. A pantry—that is, a “room or closet, usually near a kitchen, in which food, silverware, dishes, etc. are kept,” as Webster’s puts it.

That’s a shame. Keeping a pantry is an honorable custom. Your grandmother’s pantry was likely filled with jars of fruits and vegetables, maybe even some she put up herself……

Pantry building is a foreign concept in today’s society. We are very dependent on the stores being open and readily available when ever we have a need. Most families are extremely dependant on a weekly basis. In times past, this shopping style was not common practice.

As I started to build my pantry, the first thing I realized was how incredibly vulnerable I was. Say a huge snow storm shut the town down for a couple of days or something happened on a national level, we wouldn’t eat! I ran a instant consume pantry.

Over the last few months, I have put much time and effort into building my pantry. I have my basics: pasta, rice, beans, canned tuna and chicken, oats, grain. I am adding other items and rotating my supplies as to not buy and let sit.

For example, I have been buying juice on sale over the last couple of months. I bought 6 jugs of Motts Natural Apple Juice several weeks ago. Recently, I bought 12 more on sale for about .57 cents each. I will put my new jugs in the back and move the rest of the jugs forward. The key is to rotate your supplies. Another example: I bought 20 cans of organic diced tomatoes last week. The sale was .77 cents buy one, get one free. I had ten .40 cent coupons that were doubled, allowing me to “buy” those 20 cans for free. Another one of my pantry building deals was using a $10 rebate on Delmonte canned fruit and veggies, combining that with coupons and sales to not only benefit my pantry, but saved a lot of money as well. This month I also bought 50 lbs of grain from a natural food co-op and figured out that 50 pounds isn’t going to go as far as I thought it would. I will need to adjust for this miscalculation and buy more next ordering time.

To begin Pantry Building:

Spend some time planning out what sort of pantry build you want to implement. A month? Three months? Six months?

What types of basic items do you consume and how much of it will you need? List out some basics: beans, rice, pasta, grain, flour, oats, salt, sugar, oil etc.

What types of flavor builders can you use with these foundations? canned tomatoes, canned veggies, cream soups, variety of spices, oils and vinegars, canned milk.

What types of refrigerator and freezer items do you use and need to have a stock of? butter, meat, frozen veggies, frozen fruit, condiments.

What types of household supplies will you need?

After you have developed a pantry list, you may have to take some time to pay attention to the amount used during a typical month. I have recorded several usage statistics on different items in our home. For example, I know about how long one tube of toothpaste lasts or how long it takes to use up a roll of toilet paper, a pack of diapers, a box of 4 sticks of butter, a bottle of laundry detergent etc. I use a sharpie pen and mark the date on the bottle or package or make a note of the date and from that am able to figure out how long it took to use it up. I then multiply that by how long I want to store it for and determine about how many of each I item I need.

I stock up on items when they are at their lowest price and try to stock the amount I need for the length of time I have determined, although many times it takes several weeks or months to do this. The first step is making a list.

Eventually, I want to implement several freezer building days into my work week. I have experimented with making and freezing bread dough and cookie dough with excellent results. I know it is probably my overworked mind, but I literally dream of a freezer with neatly stacked and labeled bags of homemade pizza dough, bread dough, and varieties of cookie dough.

Pantry building is one of the wonderful managerial opportunities we have as homemakers to provide for our family.
